Enhancing Financial Literacy Education in Florida

Greetings, Sunshine State!

Governor Ron DeSantis has made significant strides in bolstering financial literacy education across Florida. On March 22, 2022, he signed Senate Bill 1054, commonly referred to as the Dorothy L. Hukill Financial Literacy Act. This crucial legislation mandates that high school students in the Sunshine State complete a financial literacy course as a prerequisite for earning a standard high school diploma. Starting from the 2023-2024 school year, this requirement will apply to incoming high school students and will not impact those currently enrolled.

The comprehensive financial literacy course covers essential topics, including:

  1. Types of Bank Accounts
  2. Understanding Credit Scores
  3. Navigating Taxes
  4. Effective Debt Management

Given the economic challenges faced by our nation, this initiative aims to equip students with the knowledge necessary for financial stability and independence.
Chief Financial Officer Jimmy Patronis underscores the importance of instilling financial literacy in young minds, recognizing it as a critical aspect of their future success. Additionally, Commissioner of Education Richard Corcoran emphasizes the long-term benefits of grasping concepts such as savings, budgeting, and investing.

Florida’s unwavering commitment to financial education is commendable, although it is the beginning of a long journey yet.

So, if teaching kids and teens how to make, manage, and multiply their money sounds like something you’d be passionate about, we’d love to have you on the team!

Living is the greatest learning and learning through experience makes learning lighter and more meaningful.
