financial education for teens

Welcome to Moving Out! for Teens

A 3-5 day Financial Education and Life-skills Camp/Curriculum for Teens ages 14 and up.

If you’re a teenager, or a parent of one, you know teens aren’t learning how to move out successfully and live on their own. That’s why we created Moving Out! for Teens…to teach them as much as we possibly could so they have a clue what real life looks like financially.

moving out for teensIn September of 2009, we premiered our teen financial education/life skills workshop, Moving Out! for Teens. It was a hit with teens and their parents because it’s more than a financial literacy program: it is a life-preparation curriculum unlike anything you’ve ever seen or experienced before.

Your teens will learn how to:

  • hunt and apply for an apartment from a real-live property manager
  • buy a car, insure it, and maintain it
  • apply for a credit card and understand interest payments
  • pay utility bills and how to conserve
  • go grocery shopping and comparison shop (yes, we go shopping!)
  • find and apply for a job and express themselves authentically
  • how to think about other ways to make money (like start a business!)
  • open a bank account and what to do with it
  • read a paycheck and use it wisely
  • budget their income for saving, spending, and most importantly, investing
  • and so much more!

We have found that teens walk through the door, they have a million questions ranging from what a corporation is to the dangers of credit cards to how to apply for a job.

This program gives them the space to ask these questions and get real answers from a bunch of adults who care and have been there, done that. The Moving Out! program gives them real-world experience that will generate more questions so they can start their adult lives ahead, not behind.needs and wants

Rationale for the Moving Out! for Teens Curriculum

Moving out of their parent’s home is a situation all young people face sooner or later–some with joy, high hopes, and excitement; others with sadness, uncertainty, and trepidation. The better prepared teenagers are for this inevitable event, the more successful and enjoyable their transition to adult life will be.

Our twenty-first century world is ever-changing, fast-paced, and unpredictable. Children who started school in September 2009/2010 will be retiring somewhere around the year 2075.

As Sir Ken Robinson so eloquently explains: “Education is meant to take us into this future we can’t grasp…Nobody has a clue what the world will look like in five years time, and yet we are meant to be educating (children) for it.”

There is compelling evidence to suggest that we need to “rethink the fundamental principles on which we are educating our children.” Education today needs to be dynamic, engaging, and sensitive to students’ varying learning styles. It needs to address students as individuals, strengthening their ‘self’ skills (self-confidence and self-esteem); their curiosity and imagination; their critical thinking ability; and their oral and written communication skills.

Education needs to nurture problem-solving skills, leadership qualities, and the ability to learn, unlearn, and re-learn. Students must be led to realize that maturing involves making mistakes, and that mistakes are an opportunity for growth, not a deficiency or weakness in themselves. At the same time, group activities and discussion must foster teamwork and collaboration, as well as empathy and a talent for social networking. According to the research cited by Tony Wagner, these characteristics constitute the mindset and skill-base future generations are going to need to meet the demands of a rapidly changing society.

teens learning about moneyImmersing teens in the program Moving Out! for Teens gives them the opportunity to practice these skills and develop into more competent, confident, independent, and adaptable adults, who have overcome the fear of making mistakes.

Teens who take Moving Out! for Teens demonstrate the ability to make better life choices; they become adults who are capable of being the authors of their own lives, rather than simply letting life happen to them.

More specifically, Moving Out! for Teens is a financial literacy curriculum that focuses on how people can create income for themselves, how they can effectively and efficiently manage the money they make, as well as how they can multiply their money to create the passive income that leads to financial freedom.

The Quantum Teaching and Accelerated Learning techniques that are employed throughout the Moving Out! curriculum are what make it especially appealing to learners. Teachers become facilitators of the students’ learning experiences: providers of an appropriate context within which understanding can be acquired; practical activity supervisors; discussion coordinators; and coaches cheering students to success. In this way, information heads straight for the long-term memory.moving out for teens

We don’t just teach teens have to save and budget…we teach them concepts, principles, habits, ideas and belief systems that will give them a serious leg up on their peers. Not that life is a competition, mind you, but we all know that teens who are prepared and taught how to think, understand where their thoughts come from, taught that they are fully responsible for the creation of their lives and that through continually educating themselves and growing personally and professionally, they have a better chance of really enjoying their lives and making a bigger difference in the world.

Want to teach Moving Out! for Teens to your group or classroom? Great…read on!

The Moving Out! for Teens Curriculum consists of three different outlines (3 days and 5 days) plus an amazingly powerful workshop which we call a Financial Freedom Playbook. It features many of the same financial literacy lessons (plus a whole lot more tailored to teens) that we do in our Camp Millionaire camps and curriculum and we use the exact same accelerated teaching techniques to make the lessons fun and sticky (memorable!).

This curriculum is NOT in dialogue form, i.e., it doesn’t tell you exactly what to say and when to say it nor does it give you the time that it will take to do every activity. Why? Because we have only done this program in-house and because every camp (group of teens) is different. Sometimes it might take 10 minutes to do an activity; sometimes it may take 40 minutes. It just depends on so many factors, including their ages, their experiences, their current knowledge, their interests, and their socioeconomic levels, just to name a few.

So, if you have the knowledge that it takes (or are willing to learn) to teach the above information to your group of teens, you will LOVE this program.

Moving Out! for Teens
$395 with prior purchase of Camp Millionaire

Many teachers and youth group leaders have asked to purchase this program but since it was not in dialogue form, we hesitated. But no more. Most who want to teach it tell us, “We know this information! We just need to know what to teach!”. OK, OK. We hear you so, as of January 2020, we decided to make the existing outlines and playbook available…with a catch.

You must have already purchased our Camp Millionaire curriculum first so that you 1) understand the lessons and 2) so we know you’ve watched the Camp Millionaire and The Money Game Teacher Training Videos and really understand our process and teaching techniques.

The cost of our Camp Millionaire curriculum, which can be used for summer camps or as school curriculums is $855. The cost of Moving Out! for Teens is only $395 and you’ll have access to everything you need to change a teen’s life forever!
