The idea is simple: if we want to get really good at something, we have to spend some time learning about, and practicing, this something. Money is one of the biggest 'somethings' we need to learn and if we don't get to practice with it when we're young, chances are we aren't very good with it when we're adults. From all the scary statistics being thrown about by the media, in terms of how we manage our money, it appears we're getting worse at it year after year.
Imagine this scenario: Your son (or daughter) comes to you one day and says, "Mom, I have decided I really want to grow up and become a major league ball player." You say, "Wow, that's cool. Good for you." And you go back to doing what you were doing.
Your child looks at you and asks, "So, would it be possible for you to get me a ball to learn to throw?" You say, "Maybe later." He says, "Well, how about a glove and a bat?" You respond, "Nah, I don't think so." He's a bit frustrated at this point and asks, "OK, but can you at least teach me the rules?" You say, "Oh, you can learn the rules later." Now he is really angry; he's fuming inside and feels stuck. Finally he gets really mad and yells, "But MOM, how am I ever going to become a great ball player if I don't have a ball, bat or glove to practice with and I don't know the rules?"
The problem is that a large percentage of parents, most unknowingly, provide this scenario to their children everyday. We grow them into adults but rarely give them to equipment or the rules to practice, and get good at, The Money Game!
The Ultimate Allowance system is based on this simple premise: Take the money you spend ON your kids to raise and support them and run it THROUGHT them instead! Thousands and thousands of dollars of practice later, lots of successes and probably quite a few poor choices, and you've got yourself a properly prepared adult who can now take care of himself and his family! Viola`, a financially savvy, fiscally responsible citizen.
Bottom line...it's that age old adage, "Give a kid a fish and he'll eat for a day (unless he hate fish)...but teach a kid to fish and he'll eat for a lifetime AND be able to feed others if he chooses."
NOTE: We are currently exploring the options between finding a publisher and publishing it on our own. Our intention is to provide the book both as an e-book and as a printed book. Stay tuned. We will know soon. (4/6/08)
